Forum theatre is a form of theatre that develop our out of the Theatre of the Oppressed movement. It asks: ‘how do we better deal with oppression and injustice?’. In it, actors play out a story of oppression, e.g. a boss mistreating an employee, where the oppressed person is not able to overcome their oppressor. Then, the story is played out again, with the audience invited to ‘pause’ the story and discuss what could have been done instead. Alternatives are then acted out. Thus, we are able to ‘workshop reality’, and explore different courses of action. Forum theatre gives people a chance to rehearse revolution and build confidence such that when they experience or witness oppression in real life they are better equipped to speak up.
